Carpet & Flooring Calculator

Calculate flooring requirements for carpets, vinyl, and laminate. Works out roll lengths, joins, wastage, and cost estimates.

When to Use

  • Carpet installation - including patterned carpets
  • Vinyl and linoleum flooring
  • Laminate and engineered wood flooring
  • Underlay calculations

Standard Roll Widths

RegionStandard Widths
UK & Europe4m (13ft), 5m (16ft 6")
USA12ft (3.66m), 15ft (4.57m)

Flooring Types

Carpet

  • Allow 10% extra for pattern matching
  • Wider rolls reduce joins but increase waste
  • Always run carpet along the longest dimension when possible

Vinyl / LVT

  • Usually 5-10% wastage (less than carpet)
  • Sheet vinyl often requires professional fitting
  • LVT (tiles) - calculate by pack size

Laminate & Engineered Wood

  • Sold in packs - calculator rounds up to full packs
  • Allow 10% for cutting and future repairs
  • Consider plank direction for best appearance

Additional Materials

  • Underlay - required for most carpet and laminate installations
  • Gripper rods - for carpet installations
  • Threshold strips - for doorways and transitions
  • Adhesive / underlay tape - for vinyl and underlay
  • Scotia beading - for laminate edge finishing

Tips

  • Measure at multiple points - rooms are rarely perfectly rectangular
  • Add 50-100mm all around for fitting allowance
  • Patterned carpets need extra for pattern matching
  • Buy an extra pack of laminate for future repairs
  • Check for alcoves, fireplaces, and bay windows
